Which razor should I use for shaving my body hair?

Welk scheermes moet ik gebruiken voor het scheren van mijn lichaamshaar? - Manandshaving

Shaving body hair has now become a daily routine

Many of our customers are sporty: running, swimming, and road cycling. For optimal sports performance on the bike or in the water, leg and arm hair is often shaved. Of course, we also have customers who are a bit vain. We see that shaving body hair has become a daily routine for many men. Good care goes beyond just shaving your face or trimming your beard. Shaving the armpits or intimate areas is, of course, "a different kettle of fish."

Body hair in humans does not really have a clear function according to science. So you could say: "Hupsakee, off with that hair!" Still, you have to be a bit careful when shaving different parts of the body. The skin on your face or arms can take a beating. But the skin under the armpits or of the genitals is quite sensitive and vulnerable.

If you decide to shave everything off, do so carefully and with caution. And use the right shaving tool for each type of body part. In this blog, we explain per body part how to best shave, which razor is most convenient, and what the advantages are of each type of razor.

Shaving arms and legs

Your arms and legs contain a lot of hair. The hairs are thinner compared to beard hairs. The skin of the arms and legs is fairly sturdy and can handle some wear. Still, it is useful and pleasant to wet the skin well before shaving and to apply a transparent shaving gel. You can easily apply and spread shaving gel with your fingers. It protects the skin and creates a glide film. The blade glides better and smoother over the skin. Because shaving gel is transparent, you can also clearly see where and how to shave.

The safety razor is extremely suitable for smoothly shaving the arms and legs. The advantages of the safety razor are:

  1. Easy to handle;
  2. Some safety razors have a long handle of 10 to 12 cm. This also allows you to smoothly shave the lower legs;
  3. Razors quickly get clogged by fine hairs. The safety razor head can be easily rinsed during shaving.

The following safety razors have an (extra) long handle:

  1. Feather double edge safety razor adjustable DER-A
  2. Feather double edge safety razor Popular butterfly lock
  3. Merkur 23C double edge safety razor
  4. Merkur 24C double edge safety razor XL-long handle
  5. Muhle R89 Grande double edge safety razor Chrome
  6. TIMOR double edge safety razor matchroom 100mm handle

After shaving, you may experience dry or flaky skin on your legs or arms. In this case, use a nourishing and moisturizing moisturiser or body lotion.

Shaving the chest

The chest can also contain a lot of hair. The chest skin is thin, vulnerable, and sensitive. For a comfortable and efficient smooth shave of the chest, it is best to use a safety razor. If you have sensitive skin, use a transparent shaving gel or a ready-to-use shaving foam from a can. You can easily apply and spread these shaving products with your fingers. Here too, the great advantage of a shaving gel is that it protects the skin and allows you to clearly see how and where to shave.

The safety razor is suitable for shaving chest hair. The advantages of the safety razor are:

  1. Easy to handle;
  2. Razors clog quickly due to the fine hairs. You can easily rinse the safety razor head during shaving;
  3. In case of sensitive skin, you can optionally use mildly sharp double edge razor blades.

Because the chest skin is vulnerable, you should not apply pressure while shaving. For the chest, we recommend using a light razor with a short handle:

  1. Boker double edge safety razor closed comb butterfly closure
  2. Edwin Jagger DE86 double edge safety razor black chrome
  3. Merkur 30C double edge safety razor
  4. Merkur 34C double edge safety razor
  5. TIMOR double edge safety razor matchroom 80mm handle

After shaving, you may experience a dry or burning sensation on the chest. Avoid alcohol-containing care products. Also, do not spray cologne or perfume on the chest skin after shaving. In this case, use a nourishing and moisturizing moisturiser or bodylotion.

Shaving the armpits

Shaving the armpits is difficult. Armpits are hollow and the skin is sensitive. Here too, wet the skin and protect well with a transparent shaving gel. When you shave, stretch your arm upwards so that the hollow becomes slightly less hollow and the skin is pulled a bit tighter.

Some shaving gels contain menthol or eucalyptus. These added ingredients may irritate the skin under the armpits.

For the armpits, we recommend using the regular 3-blade or 5-blade cartridge razor from, for example, Gillette or Raz*War. The advantages of the multiblade razor are:

  1. Because the razor head can move or hinge, you can better shave the skin smoothly in a hollow.
  2. The razor head has rounded corners and a wide protective edge around the blades. This reduces the chance of nicks or irritation on the side of the armpit.

After shaving, you need to be careful with deodorants. The skin is sensitive and the fragrance components or alcohol in deodorants can irritate this skin. If necessary, use a neutral deodorant for sensitive skin. The deodorant from the Swedish Recipe for Men is suitable for sensitive or irritated skin.

It is best to use a small amount of talc powder after shaving. The advantage of talc powder is that it is easy to apply. Talc powder softens and may reduce the slight burning sensation after shaving. And it provides a protective layer.

Shaving the pubic area

Shaving the pubic hair and testicles is the most difficult of all body parts. You do not have a good view underneath, and the skin is thin and fragile. The round shapes also do not make it easier to shave. Be careful when shaving your crown jewels. Shave your pubic area at most once a week. Before you start, you may need to remove excess hair with a trimmer. If you don't, your razor will continuously clog. It is best to shave in the shower with lukewarm water. Use a classic shaving cream or a transparent shaving gel for optimal protection. Use as many fragrance-free shaving products as possible. Fragrance components in, for example, shaving foam can irritate the skin.

Some shaving gels contain menthol or eucalyptus. These added ingredients may irritate the skin around the pubic area.

For the pubic area, we recommend using the regular multiblade cartridge razor from, for example, Gillette or Raz*War. The advantages of the multiblade razor are:

  1. Because the razor head can move or hinge, you can better shave the skin smoothly in a hollow;
  2. The razor head has rounded corners and a wide protective edge around the blades. This reduces the chance of razor cuts;
  3. Because the razor blade contains 3 or 5 blades, you have an even pressure distribution on the skin.

After shaving, pat the skin dry with a clean towel. After shaving, it is best to use a small amount of fragrance-free or neutral aftershave balm without alcohol or talc powder.

Here are a few more tips for shaving the pubic area:

  1. Shave at most once a week;
  2. Use neutral and fragrance-free shaving products;
  3. Do not apply pressure with the razor on the skin;
  4. Stop shaving if irritation occurs.
