History Merkur
Merkur was founded in 1896 by the manufacturer Emil Hermes in Solingen, Germany. Because another manufacturer had already claimed the name Hermes, Hermes used the name Merkur. Merkur is the Roman god of trade. Since the beginning, Merkur has been producing classic safety razors that accommodate the double edge razor blades. Merkur has several patents to its name for different models of razors. The razor manufacturer DOVO acquired Merkur in 1996. This makes DOVO Merkur one of the largest products of classic razors worldwide.
Merkur safety razors
The most popular classic razors from Merkur have a shaving head with a closed comb. The closed comb ensures that the razor blade is well secured, ensuring a pleasant and comfortable shave.
The Merkur safety razor 38C, 34C, 43C. Progress and Futur have a two-piece shaving head. The bottom half of the shaver head is attached to the handle. Screw the top half onto the bottom shaving head. This makes it easy to change razor blades.
The other razors have a three-part system. The shaving head consists of 2 separate halves and screws onto the handle. Clamp the loose razor blade between these.
In addition, some razors have a shaving head with a tooth comb. The double edge razor blade is more exposed due to the toothed shaving head. This makes this razor shave a little more aggressively. Handy for shaving coarse, heavy beard growth or if the beard hairs have a nice length after a few weeks.
The Merkur Slant Bar has a sloping shaving head. The razor makes a more cutting motion. This makes shaving heavy beard growth a little smoother and more efficient.
The Merkur Progress and Futur have an adjustable shaving head. You can adjust the height of the upper shaving head up or down using a screw mechanism. This makes the razor shave slightly more gently or aggressively. So you can tailor this type of razor to your personal shaving technique.
Of course, Merkur also has its own double edge razor blades. The shaving quality of these razor blades is medium sharp.
